Vinicius Rescues Brazil But Questions Remain

Brazil avoided a shock defeat in their opening FIFA World Cup 2026 match, but a 1-1 draw against Morocco raised fresh concerns about the team’s overall performance despite a moment of brilliance from Vinicius Jr.

The five-time world champions found themselves trailing after Morocco took the lead through Ismael Saibari and were second best for large periods of the contest in New Jersey. However, Vinicius once again demonstrated why he is regarded as one of the world’s elite forwards.

The Real Madrid star received a pass from Bruno Guimaraes on the left side of the penalty area, cut inside onto his right foot and unleashed a stunning strike into the roof of the net. The spectacular equaliser rescued Brazil from what would have been their first World Cup opening-match defeat since 1934.

Despite the result, Brazil’s performance left many questions unanswered. Carlo Ancelotti’s side struggled to control midfield, misplaced simple passes and lacked the attacking fluency traditionally associated with Brazilian football. Veteran midfielder Casemiro appeared to struggle with the pace and intensity of the game before being substituted at halftime, while defensive changes were also required as Brazil searched for improvement.

The match marked Ancelotti’s first World Cup game as a head coach. After the final whistle, the Italian admitted his side fell short of expectations and acknowledged the need for greater balance and aggression in future matches.

While the draw keeps Brazil well-positioned to advance from Group C, upcoming fixtures against Haiti and Scotland will be closely scrutinized. After a 24-year wait for another World Cup title, expectations remain immense.

For now, Vinicius provided the spark that saved Brazil from defeat. Yet the performance suggested that individual brilliance alone may not be enough if the Selecao are to end their long wait for global glory and secure a sixth World Cup crown.
