Qatar Earn Historic First World Cup Point

Qatar created a landmark moment in their football history by earning their first-ever FIFA World Cup point after a dramatic 1-1 draw against Switzerland in their Group B opener in San Francisco on Sunday.

The Asian champions appeared headed for defeat after Switzerland dominated much of the contest and took an early lead through Breel Embolo’s penalty in the 17th minute. The spot-kick was awarded after Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada was judged to have fouled a Swiss attacker inside the box. Embolo converted confidently to put the Europeans ahead.

Switzerland controlled possession, dictated the tempo and consistently threatened the Qatari defence throughout the match. Murat Yakin’s side registered 26 attempts on goal, including 10 shots on target, but failed to capitalize on their superiority. Several promising attacks broke down due to poor finishing and missed opportunities in the final third.

Despite spending long periods under pressure, Qatar remained organized and disciplined. Managed by former Spain and Real Madrid coach Julen Lopetegui, the team continued to defend resolutely while searching for an opening on the counterattack.

As the match entered stoppage time, Switzerland looked set to secure all three points. However, Qatar produced a stunning late response. Homam Ahmed delivered a cross from the left flank, and captain Boualem Khoukhi rose above the defence to power a header past Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.

The dramatic equaliser sparked jubilant celebrations among the Qatari players, coaching staff and supporters. More importantly, it secured the nation’s first point in FIFA World Cup history, a significant milestone for a country competing in only its second World Cup.

While Qatar celebrated a historic achievement, Switzerland were left frustrated after failing to convert their dominance into victory. The result leaves Group B finely balanced ahead of the next round of fixtures, with Qatar set to face co-hosts Canada and Switzerland preparing to take on Bosnia and Herzegovina.
