The death toll in the boiler blast at Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) that took place last week rose to 14 on Sunday with the death of a chief technician, an executive from the company confirmed. This comes after the National Green Tribunal on Wednesday ordered NLC to set aside Rs 5 crore as ‘interim compensation’ post the boiler blast that occurred that the company’s Cuddalore thermal power plant.
In its order, the tribunal had said that an interim compensation of Rs 30 lakh be paid to each deceased pending final assessment. It added that those who were injured in the incident must also be compensated. It said the interim compensation for those who have been injured and in the hospital for about a week should be Rs 5 lakh each while for those who have been discharged, interim compensation would be Rs 1 lakh each.
