Lucknow University’s Earth Science Research Centre , which opened this month, will contribute to PM Modi’s Ganges river clean-up programme, Namami Gange, and be a part of UP’s Vikas Sankalp Patra 2017, which will cover river science.

Established under the Institute of Geo-resources, ONGC Centre of Advanced Studies, LU had announced three new programmes, including the Earth Science Research Centre, to enable its students and faculty to get involved in the clean-up of the river Ganges, Prof Dhruv Sen Singh, director of the institute, said.

“The courses are designed to cater to several branches of geoscience, giving opportunities to students to be absorbed in organisations in India and abroad,” he said .

Namami Gange is an Integrated Conservation Mission, approved as a Flagship Programme by the Union government in June 2014 with a budget of R 20,000 Crore to accomplish the twin objectives of effective abatement of pollution, conservation and rejuvenation of the Ganges.

The other two courses launched under the Institute of Geo-resources, ONGC Centre of Advanced Studies, LU, are: M Sc in applied geology (with specialisation in petroleum geoscience) and PG diploma in exploration, resources and mining technology to cater to the present scenario and future prospects, and to develop human resources to strengthen the nation, for the present and future requirement, at par with international standards, said LU vice chancellor SP Singh.
