The Indian Railways plan to save Rs 1,400 crore annually by taking to new technology called head on generation (HOG), where power will be drawn from overhead electric (OHE) wires and supplied to coaches.
Till date, 342 trains have already been converted into HOG. This is resulting in saving of approximately Rs 800 crore. The power generator cars which used to make a huge noise and emit fumes will no longer be used. In place of two such generator cars, there will be one standby silent generator car to be used in emergencies. In place of the other car, there will be LSLRD (LHB second luggage, guard & divyaang compartments). This LSLRD will also have capability to convert power from overhead supply to be utilized in the entire train while providing space for luggage, guard room, and additional passengers. Currently, the cost of power is over Rs36 per unit, and with HOG it will cost Rs 6 per unit.
