India has set an ambitious target of deploying 175 Gigawatt (GW) of renewableenergy capacity by 2022 which is now further raised to 227 GW considering that the country is well on its way to exceeding the previously set target, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu said today. Addressing the fourth Resilient Cities Asia-Pacific (RCAP) Congress 2019 here, he called upon town planners to make sustainable solutions such as harvesting solar energy and enhancing green cover an essential part of town planning.
Naidu said economic growth must take environmental protection into consideration and dependence on fossil fuel must be reduced while exploring new forms of energy sources such as solar. “It cannot be business as usual as far as development is concerned,” he added. The Vice President called upon the representatives of provinces and cities of various countries present to adopt innovative approaches to ensure low emission-oriented development, adding that cities are battling the consequences of climate change on a daily basis.
