Hydrogen is emerging as very useful in storing and transporting renewable energy over long distances so that regions surplus in renewable energy can help meet the needs of deficit regions. This will help decarbonise heavy industry, long haul freight, shipping and aviation
The prime minister has held up before the private sector the vision of India becoming a global hub for production of green hydrogen and its exports to destinations like Japan, South Korea and Europe because of the ample availability of renewable energy in the country. The deserts of Rajasthan are a source of abundant solar energy and the costal and southern plateau regions of wind energy. This comes close on the heels of the new green hydrogen policy announced last.
