Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said the defence minister had called up the Congress president on Sunday night, but Kharge made it clear that the opposition wanted a detailed discussion in the House on the Manipur issue and a statement from PM Modi.
Why is there an uproar over Manipur?
Opposition parties have been demanding a statement and discussion in Parliament on the Manipur issue since the first day of the monsoon session. The uproar over the issue led to repeated disruptions in both houses of Parliament on the first two days of the monsoon session. Tension prevailed in the hilly areas of Manipur after a video of two women being paraded naked surfaced on Wednesday. Officials said the video is from May 4. A ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts of Manipur on May 3 to protest against the demand of the majority Meitei community for scheduled tribe status in the state. After this, more than 160 people have died in the ethnic violence that erupted in the state so far.
