As the Bharatiya Janata Party made considerable gains in the Northeast in the election results that were announced for the states of Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took centre stage at New Delhi’s newly inaugurated BJP headquarters to address jubilant party workers. With the BJP set to form government in Tripura and Nagaland, showing a considerable surge in the party’s popularity in the Northeast, the Prime Minister said that the victory was a result of the sacrifices that party workers had made for their political ideologies. The BJP’s win in the Left bastion of Tripura, the PM said, was the people’s answer to the violence by parties who were unable to digest electoral defeat. “Winning or losing in elections is a natural process in democracy. It is the beauty of a democracy. But one must have the ability to digest victory and accept defeat with a sporting spirit.”

In his speech that he halted briefly due to ‘Azaan’, Prime Minister Modi said that innocent party workers had laid down their lives due to their political ideology and dedicated the win to them. “When the sun sets, it is red in colour. But when it rises, the colour is always saffron, ” the PM said, in a reference to the party’s win over Left in its bastion of Tripura. “From being ‘no one’, BJP has ‘won’ today,’” said PM Narendra Modi. The event saw top party leaders like Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj and BJP chief Amit Shah in attendance.
