(ET) The Security and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is unlikely to approve the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) and Indian Commodity Exchange’s (ICEX) applications for launching futures contracts in petrol and diesel, sources aware of the development told Moneycontrol. This is because both petrol and diesel are politically sensitive fuels, given their ability to influence retail and wholesale inflation, sources said. In December last year, both the exchanges had filed applications with SEBI. The capital and commodities market regulator had written to the petroleum ministry seeking an in-principle approval for the contracts, which the ministry had given in May.

(ET) Goa consumes more petrol and diesel on a per capita basis than any other state in the country, while Bihar uses the least.  Per capita sales of petrol in Goa were 119.7 kg in 2017-18, over six times the national average of 19 kg, according to oil ministry data. In diesel, at 225.6 kg, Goans consumed almost three-and-half times the fuel than the national average of 66.9 kg. (BS) The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has trimmed India’s growth projection by 0.1 percentage point for 2018-19 owing to high oil prices and a tight monetary policy regime. The effect of the twin headwinds on the IMF’s projection for 2019-20 was much sharper — 0.3 percentage points. (ET) The government may infuse about Rs 8,000 crore in five or six state-run banks that are likely to fall short of regulatory capital requirements, a senior finance ministry official said. These banks may include Nirav Modi scam-hit Punjab National Bank. “There are some banks that have issued additional tier 1 capital bonds and the interest payments are due. Now if they don’t meet the regulatory capital norms, they will not be allowed to make such payments,” the official said.
