(LiveMint) The monetary policy committee (MPC) of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) raised the repo rate by 25 basis points on 6 June in its last policy review, citing major risks to Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based inflation from crude prices, elevated inflation expectations, HRA provisions by states and increase in minimum support prices (MSPs) of major kharif crops. The MPC, however, sounded more sanguine on growth because of improved capacity utilization and credit offtake, supported by healthy consumption demand. (ET) India needs an investment of around $76 bn to achieve the balance 103.67 Gigawatt (Gw) of the target of 175 Gw renewable energy capacity by 2020, power and renewable energy minister R K Singh said. India had an installed renewable energy capacity base of 69.78 Gw at the end of March 2018. “To achieve the balance target of 103.67 Gw, investment of around $76 billion has been estimated at present capital cost which includes $53.20 billion as debt and $22.80 billion as equity for the debt-equity ratio of 70:30 as per Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) norms,” Singh said in a written reply…

(LiveMint) The Parliament approved a legislation to help the government bring back fugitives involved in white-collar crimes to stand trial in India. The fugitive economic offenders bill, 2018 will become law after the President’s assent and will empower the government to seize both local and overseas assets of alleged offenders, such as Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi, who chose not to return to India to face the law even after arrest warrants were issued. Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has reported a quantum jump in profitability and order booking in the first quarter of fiscal 2018-19. The company has registered a significant jump of 109% in its profit before tax at Rs.226 Crore, compared to Rs.108 Crore achieved in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal. A team of ONGC engineers with support from Indian Navy has successfully plugged a gas leakage on an unmanned offshore platform in Mumbai High South around 180 KM from the sea shore in the Arabian Sea. A gas leakage was observed in one of the unmanned wellhead platforms S1-6, in the south field of Mumbai High. As a safety measure, the platform team immediately initiated all remote actions to shut down the well platform and to bleed off the pressure in the pipe lines. (LiveMint) The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has wide-ranging powers to regulate and supervise public sector banks, the government informed Parliament on Tuesday. The government’s statement counters RBI’s stance that the central bank lacks powers to regulate PSU banks, including dismissing banks boards and the management. The statement could be an indication that the government is unlikely to take any steps to address the problem of dual regulation flagged by RBI.
