(ET) In a big boost for Narendra Modi government, India climbed another 23 points in the World Bank’s ease of doing business ranking to 77th place, becoming the top ranked country in South Asia for the first time and third among the BRICS. In the last two years the country has climbed 53 notches, a performance matched in the past only by Bhutan. The biggest gain was in construction permit where India climbed 129 ranks to 52nd place on the back of targeted government effort to remove hurdles.

(PTI) Subsidised cooking gas (LPG) price Wednesday was hiked by Rs 2.94 per cylinder due to tax impact on the change in base price. A 14.2-kg subsidised LPG cylinder will cost Rs 505.34 from midnight tonight as against Rs 502.40 now, Indian Oil Corp (IOC), the nation’s biggest fuel retailer, said in a statement here. This is the sixth straight monthly increase in rates since June. In all rates have gone up by Rs 14.13 per cylinder since then. All LPG consumers have to buy the fuel at market price. (ET) The government has rejected for now global commodity trader Trafigura’s request for a licence to operate petrol pumps in the country, according to people aware of the development. Geneva-headquartered Trafigura, which along with Russian fund UCP and Russian oil firm Rosneft had purchased Essar Oil’s refinery and petrol pumps last year for $13 billion, had sought a separate licence to retail transportation fuels in the country but the government said the trader didn’t qualify for one just yet.
