(LiveMint) The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will need to gradually tighten monetary policy further due to rising inflation, driven mainly by higher oil prices and a falling rupee, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said on Wednesday. The central bank raised the repo rate for the second straight meeting last week by 25 basis points to 6.5 percent, while warning about the inflationary pressures. This was the company’s first mini-term tender to buy US oil, the executive, A.K. Sharma, said. (LiveMint) The Supreme Court did not agree to a plea for staying the hearing, scheduled for this Thursday, in the Allahabad High Court (HC) on the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s) bankruptcy proceedings on stressed power sector assets. Saying the hearing had progressed to a mature level, the two-judge SC bench headed by Justice Rohinton F Nariman turned down the request, from the RBI, to halt the HC process. (LiveMint) The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has cancelled licences of 368 non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) in the six months ended June, more than double the number of such cancellations in the whole of 2017, for failing to meet regulatory norms. The move is being seen as an attempt to clean up the sector, which has more than 11,402 entities, of which 222 are non-deposit taking NBFCs. (PTI) Indian banks reported a total loss of about Rs 70,000 crore due to frauds during the last three fiscals up to March 2018, the Rajya Sabha was informed today. The extent of loss in fraud cases reported by scheduled commercial banks (SCBs)for 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 was Rs 16,409 crore, Rs 16,652 crore and Rs 36,694 crore, respectively, Minister of State for Finance Shiv Pratap Shukla said in a written reply quoting RBI data.
