Panel formed to end polygamy

In May, the Assam government set up an expert committee to abolish polygamy through legislation. The panel was asked to examine the Muslim Personal Law (Shariat) Act, 1937, read with Article 25 of the Constitution of India. The panel, in its report submitted on June 8, pointed out that the state has the power to make laws to prevent polygamy.
