    71 people killed in rain and floods in Himachal Pradesh; Schools to remain closed in Shimla today

    Heavy rains and landslides have wreaked havoc in Himachal Pradesh for the last four days. So far 71 people have died in various accidents. Hundreds of houses have been destroyed due to cloudburst. A large number of people are still stranded at many places. The situation is very bad due to floods in Kangra, Mandi, Chamba. Army, Air Force, NDRF, SDRF are engaged in rescue. The Air Force is engaged in rescuing people trapped in the flood by helicopter. Himland, the posh area of Shimla, has been declared a danger zone. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu himself is saying that it will take a year to compensate for the damage caused in this disaster.

    Schools to remain closed in Shimla today

    In Himachal Pradesh, all schools and anganwadi centres in urban and rural areas will remain closed on August 17. The decision has been taken due to continuous landslides in Shimla. However, schools will open in the remaining districts of Himachal from today. The decision to close the schools was taken due to heavy rains and landslides.

    742 mm of rain in 54 days

    Himachal Pradesh has received 742 mm of water in 54 days of monsoon, which is higher than the season’s average rainfall of 730 mm between June and September 30. According to the Meteorological Department, the rain in July broke the record of the last 50 years. He also informed that the cities of Manali, Solan, Rohru, Una, Ghamrur, Hamirpur and Keylong broke all previous records of rainfall in a single day in the month on July 9. The state had recorded unprecedented rainfall on this day.

    223 mm rainfall in four days

    According to the Meteorological Department, Himachal Pradesh recorded 223 mm rainfall in four days from July 7 to 10, which is more than four times the average rainfall of 41.6 mm in the same period. The state has been witnessing a second spell of torrential rains since Sunday. The monsoon will weaken in the next few days and is likely to become active again on August 25, the official said. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is being recorded in many parts of the state this season.
