More than 16 years after 3 Idiots became one of the most beloved films in Indian cinema, director Rajkumar Hirani has shared new details about the long-awaited sequel. The filmmaker revealed that he and writer Abhijat Joshi are still developing the script, which will reunite Rancho, Farhan and Raju at a completely different stage of life.
Speaking about the project, Hirani explained that the sequel will move beyond the college setting that made the original film iconic. Instead, it will focus on what happens to the three friends 15 to 20 years later. According to the director, the characters are now married, have children, and are dealing with the challenges and uncertainties of a mid-life crisis.
The original 3 Idiots ended on a hopeful note, with Rancho (Aamir Khan) living in Ladakh as an innovative educator, Farhan (R Madhavan) achieving success as a wildlife photographer, and Raju (Sharman Joshi) finding stability in his career. The sequel aims to explore the next chapter of their lives and the new questions they face as adults.
Hirani also hinted that the film will carry a strong social message, much like the original, which resonated with audiences through its critique of the education system and its encouragement to pursue passion over societal expectations. When asked if the sequel would have a message, he responded with a confident “Of course. A big one.”
Earlier this year, Aamir Khan confirmed that the sequel is in development and praised the story, describing it as humorous, unique and emotionally engaging. He revealed that the film follows the same trio but years later, while retaining the charm and spirit that made the original a blockbuster.
Aamir Khan, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and Kareena Kapoor Khan are expected to return. However, the makers have not yet confirmed whether other memorable characters from the original film will also make a comeback.
