The government is considering awarding about 25 small and mid-sized power transmission contracts aggregating to about Rs 1,200 crore to state-run Power Grid Corporation of India (PGCIL), a move that has upset private sector transmission companies.
National Committee on Transmission has recommended that the execution of these projects should be through regulated tariff mode (RTM), a government official said. “Contracts for only some upgradations are proposed to be handed over to PGCIL,” the official said. “The larger ones are being identified for auctions.”
About two large transmission projects worth about Rs 800 crore have been proposed for tariff-based bidding, officials said. The development comes at a time when allegation of bias toward state-run companies have been levelled against the government by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
