Serena Williams made a memorable return to competitive tennis, securing a doubles victory at Queen’s Club after an absence of 1,375 days. The 44-year-old American teamed up with Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko to defeat third seeds Erin Routliffe and Nicole Melichar-Martinez 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 in front of a packed crowd at the Andy Murray Arena.
The match marked Williams’ first competitive appearance since stepping away from tennis in 2022. Despite the lengthy break, the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion showed flashes of the power, determination and shot-making ability that defined one of the greatest careers in sporting history.
Williams admitted she returned largely because she missed competing and wanted her daughters to experience watching her play. Eight-year-old Olympia and younger daughter Adira were present in the stands, cheering on their mother alongside the rest of the enthusiastic crowd.
While there were a few signs of rust, particularly on overhead shots and movement around the court, Williams quickly settled into the contest. Her trademark serve remained a potent weapon, with one delivery clocked at 120 mph. Mboko played a crucial supporting role, covering the baseline brilliantly and helping the pair dominate after a tightly contested opening set.
The American remained characteristically humble when assessing her performance, jokingly rating it a “C-minus.” However, the crowd and her partner appeared far more impressed by the comeback display.
Williams emphasized that age should never be a barrier to pursuing goals, pointing to fellow sporting legends who have returned to competition later in life. She also left the door open for future appearances, including a potential Wimbledon campaign.
For now, Williams and Mboko advance to the second round, where they will face Leylah Fernandez and Laura Siegemund. Whether this is a brief return or the beginning of a longer comeback, Serena has once again captured the tennis world’s attention.
