Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s tough response to the alleged Ram temple donation theft has reportedly triggered unease within sections of the BJP and the wider Sangh Parivar, with political observers viewing his actions as both an anti-corruption drive and a display of assertive leadership.
Adityanath constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the alleged misappropriation of temple donations and declared that “no one will be spared,” signalling that even influential figures associated with the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust would not be beyond scrutiny. The trust, which oversees the Ram temple in Ayodhya, includes several senior RSS and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leaders.
The investigation has already had significant consequences. Trust General Secretary Champat Rai and senior trustee Anil Mishra resigned after mounting pressure following the chief minister’s public warning that those responsible for betraying public faith would face strict action. Reports suggest the trust had initially opposed the registration of an FIR but later relented under pressure from the state government.
The SIT has also sought evidence from Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh, who has long alleged irregularities in land deals and temple finances. Singh claimed he submitted documents related to the alleged land scam and donation theft involving several individuals linked to the trust. According to sources, the SIT’s preliminary report noted that many of those arrested in the case had been appointed during Rai’s tenure and that complaints regarding missing donations had allegedly remained unaddressed for months.
Political insiders believe Adityanath’s uncompromising stand reinforces his image as a strong Hindutva leader ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Some also see it as an assertion of his independent political identity within the BJP.
The controversy has also renewed scrutiny of governance within the Ram temple trust, while raising broader questions about transparency, accountability and institutional oversight in managing religious donations.
