Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo has been handed a five-match suspension by FIFA following the challenge that resulted in Canada midfielder Ismael Kone suffering a serious leg injury during the FIFA World Cup.
The incident occurred during Qatar’s heavy 6-0 defeat to Canada last Thursday. Madibo, 29, was shown a red card after a dangerous tackle on Kone, which left the Canadian international with fractures to both the tibia and fibula in his lower left leg.
Following an investigation, FIFA’s disciplinary committee ruled that Madibo was guilty of serious foul play and imposed a five-match ban. The suspension remains subject to appeal.
Kone, 24, was forced to leave the field immediately after the challenge and was later taken to hospital in Vancouver, where he underwent surgery. The injury has ruled the former Watford midfielder out for the remainder of the tournament, dealing a major blow to Canada’s World Cup campaign.
Despite the unfortunate incident, Madibo visited Kone in hospital after the match, a gesture that was appreciated by many within the football community.
Kone currently plays for Italian club Sassuolo and had been an important figure in Canada’s midfield during the tournament. Canada will now have to continue their campaign without one of their key players as they prepare for their final group-stage match against Switzerland on Wednesday.
The Canadian side remains in a strong position and will aim to secure top spot in the group with a positive result. Meanwhile, Qatar face a must-win encounter against Bosnia-Herzegovina. Anything less than victory could end their hopes of advancing to the knockout stage.
The disciplinary decision highlights FIFA’s commitment to player safety as the tournament enters a crucial phase.
