Erling Haaland marked his long-awaited FIFA World Cup debut in style, scoring twice as Norway defeated Iraq 4-1 in their opening Group I match at Boston Stadium (Gillette Stadium). The Manchester City striker once again demonstrated why he is considered one of the world’s most feared goal scorers, helping Norway make a dream start to their first World Cup campaign since 1998.
For Haaland, the tournament carries special significance. Growing up, he watched the World Cup from afar as Norway repeatedly failed to qualify. Now, the 25-year-old finally has the opportunity to create his own memories on football’s biggest stage.
The match began quietly for Haaland, who saw little of the ball during the opening stages. However, he needed only one clear opportunity to make an impact. Shortly after a hydration break, he timed his run perfectly and converted a low cross from David Møller Wolfe to give Norway the lead.
Iraq responded through Aymen Hussein, whose header briefly restored parity. Yet Norway quickly regained control, with Haaland capitalizing on a mistake by goalkeeper Jalal Hassan. Pressing aggressively, the striker won possession and calmly tapped the ball into an empty net to restore his team’s advantage.
The victory eventually finished 4-1, placing Norway ahead of France at the top of Group I on goal difference. Haaland’s two-goal performance also saw him equal Norway’s all-time World Cup scoring record, previously held by Kjetil Rekdal.
While individual achievements continue to follow him, Haaland insists his focus remains on helping Norway succeed as a team. Having already guided the nation through an unbeaten qualifying campaign, he believes simply reaching the tournament was a major accomplishment.
With talented teammates such as Martin Ødegaard, Alexander Sørloth and Antonio Nusa alongside him, Norway are emerging as potential dark horses. If they are to make a deep run in the competition, Haaland is expected to play a central role.
