Ivory Coast head coach Emerse Faé criticised Germany’s sportsmanship following his side’s 2-1 defeat in their FIFA World Cup group-stage clash at BMO Field on Saturday.
Faé was particularly upset over an incident involving defender Wilfried Singo. After Singo appeared injured and deliberately put the ball out of play, Germany regained possession through a throw-in. Instead of returning the ball to Ivory Coast, German left-back Nathaniel Brown quickly restarted play and launched an attack, a decision Faé described as lacking fair play.
Speaking after the match, Faé said he was disappointed by Germany’s actions, especially given the country’s reputation as one of football’s leading nations. He added that while Brown had performed well during the game, he expected greater respect and sportsmanship in such situations.
Despite the controversy, Faé praised his players for their performance against one of the tournament favourites. Ivory Coast impressed for long periods and took the lead through Franck Kessié in the first half, silencing much of the German support. However, Germany fought back through Denis Undav, who scored twice, including the decisive winner in the second half.
Faé acknowledged that both teams had opportunities to win and said Germany ultimately capitalised on their experience. He noted that Ivory Coast had a chance to regain the lead at 1-1 but failed to convert, while Germany made the most of their opportunity through Undav’s composed finishing.
The defeat means Ivory Coast missed the chance to secure an early place in the knockout rounds. However, qualification remains firmly within their control ahead of their final group-stage match against Curaçao.
Forward Amad Diallo insisted the team would recover quickly from the setback. He said the squad remains determined to make history for Ivory Coast and is fully focused on the decisive clash. A victory over Curaçao on Thursday will guarantee the Elephants a place in the knockout stage.
