Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has become the world’s first trillionaire, reaching an estimated net worth of approximately $1.11 trillion following the record-breaking stock market debut of SpaceX. The milestone places Musk far ahead of other wealthy business leaders, including Larry Page, Sergey Brin, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and Bernard Arnault.
Musk’s rise has been extraordinary. In January 2020, he ranked only 35th among the world’s richest individuals with a fortune of around $28 billion. However, the rapid growth of Tesla and SpaceX over the following years dramatically increased his wealth. By January 2021, he had overtaken Jeff Bezos to become the world’s richest person.
His journey has not been without setbacks. Market volatility, declining technology stocks, fluctuations in Tesla’s share price, and investor concerns surrounding his political involvement led to sharp declines in his fortune during 2022 and early 2025. Nevertheless, Musk repeatedly recovered as the value of his companies continued to rise.
Today, the majority of Musk’s wealth comes from his holdings in Tesla and SpaceX. He owns roughly 12% of Tesla, valued at around $1.5 trillion, and 42% of SpaceX, which is now worth more than $2 trillion. He also holds stakes in ventures such as The Boring Company and Neuralink. Despite his enormous fortune, only a tiny fraction is held as cash, with most of his wealth tied to company shares.
Musk’s trillionaire status also highlights a broader trend: the growing dominance of technology entrepreneurs among the world’s richest people. A decade ago, tech leaders occupied only a few spots in the global rich list. Today, they dominate the top rankings, reflecting the immense influence of the technology sector on global wealth creation.
