(ET) Finance Ministry today said the next meeting of the GST (Goods and Services Tax) Council will take place on May 18-19. The meeting will held in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. This round of meeting to be headed by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley is scheduled to finalise the rates of different commodities and services. It will also approve rates of remaining items. The Council has already approved half of the rules that are required for rolling out of GST from July 1.

(MC) India’s cabinet has taken significant decisions on the country’s banking sector, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said, declining to give further details, saying it needed a Presidential accord. “Some significant decision has been taken on the banking sector in the cabinet, but propriety demands that the government should announce this only after the assent of the President,” Jaitley told a news conference after the cabinet meeting. The government and the central bank have previously said they were working on a new plan for the resolution of bad loans at Indian lenders that hit a record $150 billion as of end-December.

(TH) Giving a push to the government’s move to boost domestic Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) consumption, the public sector oil marketing companies (OMCs) are planning to set up nearly 6,500 new distribution centres. Under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, the government aims to release of 5 crore subsidised new LPG connections to women of below poverty line families, largely in rural backdrops, till fiscal 2018-2019. During fiscal 2016-2017, OMCs released 3.25 crore new LPG connections. (TOI) The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) recently demonstrated a solar hybrid electric car, designed and developed using in-house resources, at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in Thiruvanathanapuram. Isro made an announcement about this environment-friendly car on Monday.VSSC is Isro’s centre for making various types of rockets like the Polar SatelliteLaunch Vehicle and the Reusable Launch Vehicle. The demonstration of the green-friendly vehicle, held in the last week of March, included a successful uphill drive. Isro is now researching ways to cut down the car’s cost.
