(TH) A major fire broke out at the go-down of the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited’s Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) bottling plant at Cherlapally in north-eastern part of the city on Thursday night. Panic gripped the industrial and residential localities around the plant in Cherlapally as LPG cylinders blew up one after another. Worried over their safety, people of the locality moved to safer places. What triggered the fire was not yet known but it started in the go-down around 8.30 p.m., Rachakonda Police Commissioner Mahesh Bhagwat said. “Immediately, alert workers closed the filling unit,” he said.

(ET) Uttarakhand government and Indian Institute of Petroleum have agreed in principle to make bio fuel and turpentine oil from “Perule” (pine needles). In this regard, a MoU is likely to be signed between them soon. Uttarakhand government has issued a press release in this connection on Wednesday. (ET) Shares of oil marketing companies (OMCs) plunged up to 6 per cent in afternoon trade on Wednesday after ETNow reported that the government may ask the companies to absorb further hike in oil prices. BPCL lost 6.23 per cent to end the day at Rs 500.35, while HPCL and Indian Oil Corporation were down 5.06 per cent and 4.28 per cent at Rs 457.35 and Rs 416.15, respectively. According to reports, the government will unlikely pass further rise in fuel prices due to higher inflation. It also unlikely to roll back fuel excise duty due to fiscal constraints.

(PTI) As many as 30 crore families have got bank accounts since the launch of India’s biggest ever bank account opening drive, Jan Dhan Yojana, three years back, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said today. About 42 per cent of households were unbanked before the Jan Dhan Yojana, which aims to give every household access to banking facilities by offering them zero-balance accounts across all commercial banks.
