(PTI) State-owned Punjab National Bank today said it has detected a USD 1.77 billion (about Rs 11,400 crore) scam where billionaire jeweller Nirav Modi allegedly acquired fraudulent letters of undertaking from a branch in Mumbai to secure overseas credit from other Indian lenders. PNB has suspended 10 officers and referred the matter to CBI for investigation. (LiveMint) The government is planning to cap how much drug retailers and wholesalers can earn on medicines they sell in an effort to arrest rising drug prices. The Department of Pharmaceuticals (DoP) has recommended an increase in trade margins, or what wholesalers and retailers earn on the sale of medicines, on all drugs with maximum retail price (MRP) above Rs2 per unit—i.e. per tablet, capsule, vial, tube, bottle, injection, etc.—while retaining it at the current level of 30% for those priced below Rs2, two people aware of the matter said.

(PTI) In a major decision, the defence ministry today approved capital acquisition proposals worth Rs 15,935 crore which included purchase of 7.40 lakh assault rifles, 5,719 sniper rifles and light machine guns to bolster the strength of the armed forces. The long-pending proposals were cleared at a meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), the defence ministry’s highest decision making body on procurement.
