(PTI) Central Railway has recovered fines totalling Rs 153.82 crore from ticketless travellers in 2017-18, a rise of 19.58 per cent from the amount collected during the previous fiscal, officials today said. A CR statement said that during the fiscal year that ended on March 31 this year, railway staffers detected 31.45 lakh cases of ticketless and irregular commuting and recovered fines amounting to Rs 153.82 crore. In the financial year 2016-17, fines totalling Rs 128.63 crore, from 26.88 lakh cases, were recovered, CR chief spokesperson Sunil Udasi said. (LiveMint) The Gujarat high court on Friday acquitted former state minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Maya Kodnani in the 2002 Naroda Patiya riot case in which 97 people were killed by a mob, but upheld the conviction of former Bajrang Dal leader Babu Bajrangi. The high court upheld the convictions of 13 people including Bajrangi and convicted three others for the first time while acquitting 18 of the 32 people convicted by the trial court in 2012. Kodnani had been found guilty by the trial court and sentenced to 28 years’ imprisonment. (ET) In a bid to promote Pradhan Mantri Ujwala Yojana (PMUY) scheme, Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Friday announced free gas connections for Dalits and every other backward class in Bihar. “We will provide free LPG to all Dalits and backward caste families under our scheme, Pradhan Mantri Ujwala Yojana,” Pradhan told the media. Under PMUY, the gas connections cost Rs 3,200 per connection, out of which half the cost is borne by the government, the rest is paid in installments. (TNIE) As many as 70,000 additional LPG connections will be provided to eligible beneficiaries under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) in the State on Ujjwala Diwas on Friday. The Ujjwala Diwas, part of Gram Swaraj Abhiyan, being organised from April 14 to May 5 aims at promoting the enhanced target of enrolling eight crore beneficiaries through 15,000 LPG panchayats in the country. (ET) Petrol prices in Delhi touched a fresh high of Rs 74.08 per litre on Friday, the highest in nearly five years. In September 2013 the price had touched Rs 74.10 a litre. In Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai too, prices climbed to new multi-year highs at Rs 76.78, Rs 81.93 and Rs 76.85 per litre respectively, the Indian Oil website said.  The previous highs in these cities were Rs 78.03 (Kolkata, August 2014), Rs 82.07 (Mumbai, March 2014) and Rs 76.93 (Chennai, July 2014).
