(Livemint) Coal may account for half of India’s power generation in 2030 despite a boom in solar and wind energy projects, according to analysis by the country’s power-planning body. The assessment, released on Monday by the nation’s Central Electricity Authority, highlights that the nation has a large existing fleet of coal plants and that there’s a mismatch between peak periods of demand and output from renewables. (BS) The waiver of 2.5 per cent duty on imports of iron ore lumps, fines and pellets can bring much relief to the domestic steel makers after March 2020, when merchant mines across the country are headed for expiry. A report by Icra Research says the sluggish pace of auctions of mineral blocks could cast uncertainties on iron ore supplies after the lease validity of the merchant mines ceases. The deficit in iron ore is pegged in the range of 52-55 million tonnes (mt) after supplies from the merchant mines freeze. The supply stress, Icra feels, would be felt in 2020-21. (FE) The Supreme Court on Tuesday validated Adani Power’s claim for compensatory tariff from state-owned discom Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam (GUVNL) for additional costs incurred in supplying power from its imported coal-based Mundra plant, after the Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC) reneged on its promise to supply local coal from Mogra-II coal block in Chhattisgarh. The court asked the central power regulator to issue the relevant tariff order within three months after the power major approached it with a plea. (PTI) The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a penalty of Rs 1.75 crore on four public-sector banks, including PNB and UCO Bank, for non-compliance with KYC requirement and norms for opening of current accounts. While PNB, Allahabad Bank and UCO Bank have been fined Rs 50 lakh each, a Rs 25-lakh penalty has been imposed on Corporation Bank. Giving details, the RBI said the penalty has been imposed for non-compliance with certain provisions of directions issued by it on know your customer norms or anti-money laundering standards and opening of current accounts.
