(ET) The Modi government has put a Rs 40,000 crore bet on new technologies to decarbonise India’s vast reserves of Black Diamond as the world’s second-largest coal consumer continues to draw flak from climate activists and renewables chip away at demand from thermal power stations. In its latest initiative to find cleaner use for coal, state-run behemoth Coal India and its subsidiaries are in the process of setting up five projects to make methanol, or methyl alcohol, from coal using what is commonly known as CTL (coal-to-liquid) technology. Each of these projects is estimated to cost approximately Rs 6,000 crore.

(PTI) Concerted efforts by the Reserve Bank to move to a non/less-cash economy by pushing digital payments have begun to pay rich dividends as the volume of such payments has jumped manifold in the past five years, the latest data from the central bank showed. Between 2015-16 and 2019-20, digital payments have grown at a compounded annual growth rate of 55.1 per cent – from 593.61 crore in the year to March 2016 to 3,434.56 crore in the year to March 2020. (ET) In a big reform initiative, the government on Wednesday decided to put domestically produced gas under a standard price discovery mechanism to help scale up local production from fields of ONGC, OIL, Reliance and Vedanta and help create a uniform gas market. Accordingly, the Union Cabinet approved a standard e-bidding procedure for market-based price discovery of gas across various contractual regimes. Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that under the new reform initiative, a standardised e-bidding mechanism will be suggested by upstream regulator Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH) for transparent market-based discovery of gas price.
