PTI The road transport and highways ministry has proposed to build 50,000 km of high-speed (access-controlled) corridors by 2047, a senior official said on Friday. Once completed, the average travel speed of trucks will increase from the current 45 kmph to 75-80 kmph on the National Highway network, Road Transport and Highways Secretary Anurag Jain said. PTI Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is set to embark on a three-day visit to the UK to inject new momentum into strategic and security engagement between the two countries, including possible collaboration for joint development of fighter jets and other military platforms. Singh is scheduled to hold wide-ranging talks with his British counterpart Grant Shapps with a focus on sharing of critical technology and expanding bilateral industrial defence cooperation, people familiar with the matter said. The Hindu The Reserve Bank of India has asked banks to annually review accounts that have not seen customer-induced transactions for over a year, and term deposit accounts where there is no explicit renewal mandate and the funds have not been withdrawn after maturity. It also barred banks from levying penal charges for non-maintenance of minimum balance in any account classified as inoperative or for activation of inoperative accounts. The instructions are part of fresh guidelines for inoperative accounts and unclaimed deposits with the aim of reducing the quantum of unclaimed deposits and frauds and improving grievance redressal. BS A record 81.8 million income tax returns (ITRs) were filed till December 31 for the assessment year 2023-24, up 9 per cent over the 75.1 million filings made in the corresponding period of 2022-23. According to the income tax website, 79.9 million returns were verified and 77.7 million processed during the period. The low number of ITRs filed by assessees has been one of the major concerns of the revenue authorities. For instance, 58.7 million returns were filed by income tax assessees during the assessment year 2018-19. The number rose to 66.9 million the following year. It, however, declined…
