Gujarat Moves To Lower VAT On Petrol, Diesel

    (TH)

The Gujarat government on Thursday gave indications of a possible reduction in the Value Added Tax (VAT) rates for petrol and diesel after the Centre asked States to take measures to bring down the fuel prices. The move will make poll-bound Gujarat the first to follow the Centre’s suggestion.

On Wednesday, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani had announced the State’s resolve to cut VAT rates. Gujarat levies 28.96 per cent VAT on petrol and diesel. While an official announcement is awaited, top government sources confirmed the move. Centre had reduced basic excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹2 per litre responding to the public anger over rising fuel prices.

    Adani’s rollback

In a separate development, private sector gas distributor Adani Gas Limited rolled back the hike in CNG and PNG prices effective Wednesday.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Adani Gas stated: “Retail Sales Price of CNG in Ahmedabad and Vadodara is revised from ₹47.80 per kg to ₹45.95 per kg. Retail Sales Price of PNG (Domestic) in Ahmedabad and Vadodara is revised from ₹21.36 per SCM to ₹20.16 SCM (excluding VAT) with effect from October 6, 2017.”
