The diesel locomotive factory being set up by General Electric (GE) at Marhowrah in Bihar is on track, rail minister Piyush Goyal said on Thursday, allaying concerns that Indian Railways was planning to exit the project as it wanted to fully electrify the network.
“I don’t see any change happening (to the project). Their (GE’s) top officials had met me four-five days ago. The work in the factory is going on,” the minister told reporters at Rail Bhavan. “But certainly, in view of concerns on pollution and climate change, you’ll appreciate going for electrification is in the interest of people. It will save us billions of dollars.”
ET had reported on Thursday that the government was keen on reaching an accord with GE over the project. “We have had several fruitful discussions with GE, including can we look at opportunities going forward where we can meet the twin objectives of reducing pollution and saving cost and also making sure that the contract continues ..
