The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state has found itself on the wrong foot on the issue of a probe by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the distribution of compensation for widening the National Highway-74 in Udham Singh Nagar district.Interestingly, the alleged scandal, which took place during the previous Congress regime, has given the Opposition Congress a chance to hit back at the BJP government for trying to scuttle the CBI probe.Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat, after coming to power with unprecedented majority in the state Assembly, had resolved to tackle corruption with an iron hand and recommended a CBI investigation into the “major scam” in the acquisition of farmland in Udham Singh Nagar district for the widening of NH 74. He also suspended seven officials for their alleged involvement in the case.
