Canada booked their place in the FIFA World Cup round of 16 for the first time in history after a dramatic 1-0 victory over South Africa at SoFi Stadium on Sunday. Stephen Eustáquio emerged as the hero, scoring a stunning stoppage-time winner to seal Canada’s maiden knockout-stage triumph at a World Cup.

The tense contest appeared destined for extra time as South Africa defended resolutely despite sustained Canadian pressure. However, in the second minute of added time, Alistair Johnston’s long delivery into the penalty area was only partially cleared, allowing Eustáquio to chest the ball down before firing a superb volley into the bottom corner beyond goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

The historic victory sparked emotional celebrations among the Canadian squad. Head coach Jesse Marsch praised his players after the final whistle, calling them “Canadian heroes” and saying their achievement would inspire future generations to embrace football across the country.

Canada, co-hosting the tournament, had progressed from the group stage after matches in Toronto and Vancouver before suffering a 2-1 defeat to Switzerland, forcing them to play their knockout fixture away from home. Despite being in Los Angeles, the Canadians enjoyed overwhelming support from travelling fans and local supporters.

Defender Alphonso Davies made his long-awaited return in the 75th minute after missing the group stage with a hamstring injury. The Bayern Munich star immediately influenced the game by creating a golden opportunity for Promise David, who narrowly missed the target.

South Africa, who reached the knockout rounds for the first time after defeating South Korea 1-0, bowed out despite a determined display. Coach Hugo Broos praised his team’s effort, admitting Canada possessed greater pace and power while expressing pride in his players’ historic campaign.

Canada will now face either the Netherlands or Morocco in Houston as they continue their remarkable World Cup journey.
