BCCL Pioneers Women Empowerment In Healthcare And Technical Domain

Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), a key subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL), has taken a bold stride toward gender equality and institutional innovation with two landmark women-led initiatives in Dhanbad. These efforts underscore the company’s commitment to fostering inclusive growth and empowering women across all levels of operation.

In a historic move, BCCL’s Koyla Nagar Hospital conducted its first fully women-staffed general shift. From doctors and nurses to support personnel, the entire shift was managed by women, marking a milestone in public sector healthcare. This initiative, guided by the Ministry of Coal and CIL’s broader vision for inclusivity, reflects a growing emphasis on equal opportunity within the organization.

The shift was formally inaugurated by Shri Samiran Dutta, Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) of BCCL, in the presence of directors and senior officers. Key female healthcare leaders such as Dr. Poonam Dubey, Chief of Medical Services, and Dr. Vandana Thakur, Chief Medical Officer at Central Hospital Dhanbad (CHD), were also present.

CMD Dutta emphasized that this development is a testament to BCCL’s ongoing efforts to promote women’s leadership. “From healthcare to technical operations, women are shaping the future of BCCL with confidence and capability,” he said.

This milestone coincides with CHD’s recent achievement of dual ISO certifications — ISO 9001:2015 for Quality Management and ISO 45001:2018 for Occupational Health and Safety — awarded by UKAF CERT Limited, United Kingdom. These recognitions place CHD among a select group of public sector hospitals in India certified for both quality and safety, further affirming BCCL’s commitment to excellence in healthcare.

In another significant development on the same day, BCCL inaugurated its first centralized technical repair centre for LED and solar energy equipment, fully operated by women technicians. Located in Koyla Nagar, this facility marks a pioneering effort to integrate women into core engineering and maintenance roles that have traditionally been male-dominated.

The inauguration was again led by CMD Shri Samiran Dutta, who interacted with the women-led team responsible for repairing a range of electrical equipment. “Empowerment means trust in capability,” he said. “This centre is a shining example of how women are now leading not just in caregiving roles, but also in technical and engineering domains.”

The workshop is currently managed by seven female employees from the E&M (Electrical and Mechanical) Department, working under the guidance of a workshop in-charge. Together, they are responsible for repairing LED lights, solar lighting systems, and various other electrical gadgets.

These dual initiatives reflect BCCL’s integrated and people-centric approach to organizational growth. By placing gender parity and skill development at the forefront, BCCL is not only contributing to the nation’s energy needs but also setting new standards in inclusivity and empowerment within the public sector.
