The results of the by-elections to 7 assembly seats in 6 states held on Tuesday will be announced today. The counting of votes begin at 8 am. The results of this election are being seen as a test for the opposition alliance ‘India’ India against the BJP-led NDA ahead of assembly elections in five states later this year and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Most of the by-elections held on Tuesday A huge turnout was recorded in the seats.
Dhanpur in Tripura’s Sepahijala district recorded 89.20 per cent polling and Boxnagar constituency recorded 83.92 per cent polling. In Dhupguri in West Bengal and Puthupally in Kerala, the ‘India’ constituent parties are contesting against each other. Around 76 per cent voting was recorded in Dhupguri and around 73 per cent in Puthupally.
In the by-election in Ghosi constituency of UP, ‘India’ formed a united front. Around 50.30 per cent voting was recorded here and in Dumri in Jharkhand, where 64.84 per cent of the total 2.98 lakh voters exercised their franchise. In Bageshwar in Uttarakhand, there was a fight between the BJP and the Congress, where 55.44 percent voting was recorded.
Direct fight between BJP and SP in Ghosi assembly
The Ghosi seat fell vacant after prominent OBC (Other Backward Classes) leader Dara Singh Chauhan, who won on an SP ticket during the 2022 assembly polls, recently joined the BJP and resigned from the party membership.
The BJP has fielded Dara Chauhan as its candidate for the by-election. The SP has fielded Sudhakar Singh. The by-election to the Ghosi assembly constituency is the first to be held in the state after the formation of ‘India’, a group of opposition parties, so it is also being considered as a rehearsal for next year’s Lok Sabha elections. The BSP has not fielded any candidate in this election. A total of 10 candidates are in the fray here.
Direct contest between ‘India’ and NDA in Dumri assembly
In Dumri assembly seat, the opposition alliance ‘India’ candidate Baby Devi is in a direct contest with NDA candidate Yashoda Devi.
The NDA has expressed confidence that it is fully prepared to snatch the seat from the JMM. The by-election was necessitated following the death of former education minister and JMM MLA Jagarnath Mahato in April.
The JMM has fielded Mahato’s wife Baby Devi as its candidate for the ‘India’ alliance, while the All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) party has nominated Yashoda Devi as the NDA candidate.
Bageshwar Assembly of Uttarakhand
The by-election was necessitated following the death of Cabinet Minister Chandan Ram Das in April this year due to illness. The by-election is a direct contest between the BJP and the Congress. The BJP has fielded Parvati Das, wife of Chandan Ram Das, while the Congress has fielded Basant Kumar. Some other parties have also fielded their candidates.
