    Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend G-20 summit, speaks to PM Modi over phone

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a telephonic conversation today with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The two leaders reviewed the progress on a range of issues of bilateral cooperation and exchanged views on global issues, including the recently concluded BRICS Summit in Johannesburg. In addition, President Putin expressed his inability to attend the G20 Summit in New Delhi on September 9-10, 2023. Russia will be represented by Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov, he said.

    During this conversation, Vladimir Putin once again congratulated Narendra Modi on the successful landing of Indian space station Chandrayaan-3 near the South Pole of the Moon. They reaffirmed their desire to further develop bilateral cooperation in space exploration.

    ‘Emphasis on expansion of BRICS’

    Putin and PM Modi had a telephonic conversation in Fozohansburg. The outcomes of the XV BRICS Summit were discussed. At the same time, the importance of the agreements made was emphasized, mainly, the expansion of BRICS, which will undoubtedly contribute to the development of its influence in international affairs. The two sides agreed to have close dialogue in the context of Russia’s BRICS Chairmanship beginning January 1, 2024. The two leaders also exchanged views on the upcoming G20 Summit in New Delhi.

    ‘Discussion on topical issues of Russian-India relations‘

    In addition, topical issues of continuously evolving Russian-India relations in the spirit of special and privileged strategic partnership were discussed. The positive dynamics of trade and economic cooperation were underlined. Mutual commitment was expressed for continued implementation of large-scale projects in the energy sector and joint work on the expansion of international transport and logistics infrastructure.
