In its endeavour towards more sustainable power generation, NTPC Ltd, India’s largest power producer, has started utilising agro-residue-based pellets to co-fire its power plants along with coal. The purpose behind the usage of agro-based pellets is twofold – one it turns off stubble burning in farms and brings down pollution and two it reduces coal usage in power generation.
In the past fortnight, NTPC Dadri power plant has been co-firing close to 70-80 tons of agro-residue fuel along with coal. The power plant till date has received almost 2400 tonnes of non-torrefied biomass pellets from a large number of suppliers in Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Moreover, the company is in the process of procuring around 20,000 tonnes per day stubble for its other power plants located across the country as well.
