Carbon emissions from refineries will now be used to boost crude oil production from aging oilfields in the country. Indian Oil has signed a preliminary agreement to capture carbon dioxide emitted from its refineries and pipe it to ONGC and Oil India for injecting in their depleting oilfields to boost output, a move that would address climate change concerns as well as India’s falling oil production, SSV Ramakumar, director (research & development) at Indian Oil Corp, told ET.
Indian Oil’s refinery in Gujarat will supply CO2 to ONGC fields in the state while its refineries in Northeast will cater to Oil India’s fields in the region. Based on these projects, the firm plans to expand it to other refineries. Ageing fields across the globe use enhanced oil recovery techniques to extract oil that cannot be otherwise recovered.
