Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has organized cyclothon in six metro cities to create awareness on fuel conservation as well as protection of environment. The cyclothons, organised in Dehradun, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Kolkata, Agartala and Chennai during November and December 2017, drew over 5000 participants from all walks of life.
In order to spread the message across the country about the importance of fuel conservation, ONGC has been actively participating in various initiatives including this cyclothon. The genesis of organizing the cyclothons lies in Hon’ble Prime Minister’s clarion call to people through ‘Mann Ki Baat’ to voluntarily dispensing with the use of petrol & diesel for one day every week. The call was aimed at conserving fuels which is of utmost importance in nation building. The objective of promotion of cycling through this event is to instill socio-environmental consciousness and garner support for fuel saving.
ONGC, as a responsible corporate citizen, has partnered with Petroleum Conservation and Research Association (PCRA), under the aegis of Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas to organize cyclothons in six cities to give impetus to the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision. More than 5000 people pledged their support to not use vehicle at least one day in a week and contribute to the larger mission of fuel conservation and environment protection. State Police Authorities and District administration shared all support to make the cyclothons a grand success.
ONGC has been at the forefront of many environment friendly initiatives to achieve the mission of carbon neutrality in its operations. The company has a dedicated Carbon Management group that constantly monitors the company’s carbon footprints. An astounding 15 projects of ONGC have been registered by the UNFCCC as Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Projects, that has potential Certified Emission Reduction (CER) of 21,03,198 each year, a unique standing in the industry (1CER = 1 metric tonne of CO2 equivalent). Also, to safeguard the working and surrounding environment, ONGC has adopted a well-defined HSE policy focusing on Occupational Health, Safe Operation and control of pollution.
PCRA has rolled out a campaign to organize Cyclothon in 76 cities across India to sensitise the country to adopt the ideology of conservation for a greener environment. Earlier, in November 2017, ONGC along with other oil PSUs, organized the PCRA Saksham Pedal Delhi cyclothon that witnessed over 5000 participants. Another mega cyclothon has been planned at Mumbai where even more people are expected to participate.
