Marta Kostyuk and Elise Mertens reached their maiden Wimbledon quarterfinals on Monday, while Jasmine Paolini ended Alexandra Eala’s memorable campaign to complete the last-eight lineup at the All England Club.
Ukraine’s 12th seed Kostyuk continued her outstanding Grand Slam season with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over American qualifier Ashlyn Krueger. Fresh from reaching the French Open semifinals last month, the 23-year-old overcame a 4-2 deficit in the second set to seal her first Wimbledon quarterfinal appearance.
Belgium’s Elise Mertens also celebrated a career milestone by advancing to the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time in her ninth appearance at the tournament. The 25th seed defeated Czech 21st seed Marie Bouzkova 6-4, 6-4, building on her impressive third-round upset of former champion Elena Rybakina.
A two-time Wimbledon doubles champion, Mertens will next face either Czech ninth seed Linda Noskova or 2025 Australian Open champion Madison Keys for a place in the semifinals.
On Centre Court, Italy’s Jasmine Paolini battled past rising Filipino star Alexandra Eala 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in a gripping fourth-round contest. The 13th seed returned to the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time since finishing runner-up in 2024.
Paolini praised Eala’s fighting spirit after the match and admitted she was thrilled to perform in front of tennis legend Roger Federer, who watched from the Royal Box.
Eala, 21, made history during her breakthrough run by becoming the first Filipina woman to reach both the third and fourth rounds of a Grand Slam. Although she forced a deciding set with an impressive second-set comeback, Paolini’s experience proved decisive as the Italian secured a crucial late break before serving out the match.
Paolini will now face Kostyuk in one of the standout quarterfinals, while Mertens continues her bid for a first Grand Slam singles semifinal since the 2018 Australian Open.
