Karnataka is set for a significant political transition as Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar is expected to take oath as the state’s next Chief Minister on June 3. The development comes after Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot accepted the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and dissolved the Council of Ministers.
The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) is scheduled to meet in Bengaluru to formally elect its new leader, with Shivakumar widely expected to be chosen unanimously. The transition follows a leadership arrangement reportedly finalized by the Congress high command in New Delhi.
Amid the change in leadership, discussions are underway regarding the composition of the new government. According to reports, Siddaramaiah has sought a Deputy Chief Minister position for his son, MLC Yathindra Siddaramaiah. The issue was reportedly discussed during Siddaramaiah’s meetings with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, senior leader Rahul Gandhi, and former Congress president Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi.
The meetings also focused on the formation of the new Karnataka government, upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, and broader political strategies. Karnataka Congress in-charge Randeep Surjewala described Siddaramaiah’s interaction with Rahul Gandhi as cordial and productive.
Speaking ahead of the CLP meeting, Shivakumar confirmed that all Congress legislators had been instructed to remain in Bengaluru as central party leaders were expected to participate in the transition process.
Siddaramaiah submitted his resignation on Thursday, stating that he was complying with the decision of the party leadership. Following the Governor’s acceptance of his resignation under Article 164(1) of the Constitution, he has been asked to continue as caretaker Chief Minister until the new government is sworn in.
Thanking the Congress leadership and the people of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah said it had been an honour to serve as Chief Minister twice and expressed confidence that the party continues to enjoy a strong majority in the Assembly.
