US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said Washington is ready to sell as much energy to India as it can buy, highlighting stronger energy cooperation ahead of his visit to India. Speaking to reporters before departing for India, Rubio described India as a “great ally” and “great partner”, adding that the United States wants New Delhi to become a bigger part of its energy export portfolio.
Rubio also said Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, is expected to visit India next week for discussions related to oil sales. His remarks come amid rising Venezuelan crude exports and growing global concerns over energy security due to tensions involving Iran and the wider West Asia region. India currently imports nearly half of its energy needs, making fuel security a major priority. Rising tensions in West Asia have already pushed up global oil and LNG prices, prompting India to increase fuel prices twice within four days to reduce pressure on oil marketing companies.
Rubio also warned that the US would oppose any move by Iran to control or monetise access to the strategic Strait of Hormuz, following reports that Tehran is considering a permanent toll arrangement for ships passing through the route. He said such actions could threaten global trade and freedom of navigation.
