CSR Spending Trend Skewed Towards The Top 220 Companies

Interestingly, the top 220 companies spent Rs. 8114.7 crore that was 58.68% of the total CSR spending (Rs. 13,828 crore) of FY16, while in FY15, this spending was Rs. 5696.7 crore that was 59.55% of the total CSR spending (Rs. 9,565 crore) of FY15. During FY17, many companies had not filed the data so it was quite difficult to assess accurately the total CSR spending of all the eligible companies, yet the Rs. 7939.45 crore spent by the top 220 companies under this head clearly shows that CSR spending is quite skewed towards the top.

In fact, the top 20 companies spent a whooping Rs. 4782.7 crore during FY17, while they spent Rs. 4296.7 crore during FY16, showing a spurt of Rs. 486 crore in CSR spending. However, Reliance Industries topped the chart with Rs 674 crore CSR spent in absolute terms but it were PSU Maharatna ONGC and HDFC Bank that jacked up the CSR allocations by Rs. 104.90 crore and 110.6 crore respectively over the previous year to clock Rs. 525.90 crore and Rs. 305.42 crore CSR expenditure respectively. On the other hand, coal major Southeastern Coalfields (SEC) and PSU Maharatna NTPC were the biggest spoiler as their CSR spending decreased by a whooping Rs. 228 crore and Rs 214 crore to mere Rs. 42.50 crore and Rs. 277.81 crore respectively. The SEC had made Rs 271 crore and the NTPC Rs. 492 crore CSR expenditure in FY16, though NTPC spent more than the amount prescribed under the company law.
