Earlier in the day, Prem Chandra Agrawal, 56, a 3-time BJP MLA from Rishikesh, was elected unopposed as the Uttarakhand Assembly Speaker. He was handed over the charge as the new Speaker of the House by pro-tem Speaker Harbans Kapoor after he was elected to the post. Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat had introduced him in the Assembly and referred to him as a resolute man of action. Since no other party or member had filed nomination for the Speaker’s post on Wednesday, Aggarwal’s unopposed election was a foregone conclusion. Agrawal has a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) background.
