Reliance Jio on Thursday formally launched its wired broadband JioFiber, hoping its bundle of free services and superfast internet speeds will help it replicate the success it notched up as India’s youngest and only profitable mobile services provider. With a basic monthly plan for Rs.699 and 100 GB (plus 50 GB of promotional data) at 100 Mbps speed, JioFiber also offers free voice calls and video conferencing through a compatible TV and high-speed gaming and content sharing across the home network.

Reliance Industries Ltd chairman Mukesh Ambani had at the company’s annual general meeting last month sparked off India’s broadband wars by announcing the wired internet service, which hopes to replicate the runaway success of its Jio mobile service.Earlier this week, rival Bharti Airtel also announced a converged digital entertainment platform, Xstream. Airtel Xstream stick, priced at Rs.3,999, is an Android-based OTT (over-the-top) stick that also provides access to Airtel’s movie roster and OTT library, as well as Airtel’s Wynk Music’s catalogue.
