The NTPCBSE -0.37 % Limited is likely to shelve its proposed expansion of Kudgi power project in Vijayapura district, Karnataka, in line with the recent trends in the power sector that is moving towards solar.
The public sector giant has already built three super-critical thermal power units of 800 MW each, and has begun commissioning one by one. While the first unit is expected to launch commercial generation in the first week of May, the other two will go on stream by October this year.
The 2400 MW project, which sits on 3351-acre plot, has space to accommodate two more super-critical units of 800 MW each. The NTPC’s original plan was to put up a capacity of 4000 MW in all in two stages. But the management is now inclined to drop the 1600 MW expansion plans, according to sources in NTPC. This is likely to upset capacity addition projections, not just of Karnataka, but also other southern states, each of whom has a share in it.
