The proposal to establish Doppler radars in Nainital, Pithoragarh and Dehradun is still far from being a reality. The non-availability of land that meets the specifications required for the setting up of Doppler radars is one of the reasons for the delay. While the Department of Disaster Management has identified land in Pithoragarh and Nainital, the land sighted for the Doppler radar in Mussoorie (Dehradun) is in the possession of the Department of Tourism.
So far, the Department of Tourism has not given the go-ahead for the land.“There has been delay as the IMD is yet to finalise the sites, though we had earlier proposed to include the setting up of these radars in the programme being supported by the World Bank but the IMD insisted on establishing the systems,” said Amit Negi, Secretary, Disaster Management Department.
