The Central government has announced to convene a special session of Parliament on Thursday (August 31), Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said. More than 10 important bills are expected to be introduced in Parliament during the special session, which is being convened just days after the recently concluded Monsoon Session. Parliament usually holds three sessions in a year, including the Budget session, the Monsoon Session and the Winter Session.
A special session was first convened in 1977.
On February 28, 1977, a special session was convened for the first time in the country. A two-day special session of the Rajya Sabha was held to seek extension of President’s rule in Tamil Nadu and Nagaland under Article 356(4).
A two-day special session was held in the Rajya Sabha on June 3, 1991 to seek approval of President’s rule in Haryana under the provisions of Article 356(3).
Special session of Lok Sabha
In 1997, a special session of the Lok Sabha was held. Between August 26, 1997 and September 1, 1997, special sittings were held to commemorate 50 years of India’s independence, during which there was no Question Hour, Zero Hour or official business.
