Ministry Of Skill Development And Entrepreneurship Felicitates ONGC For Record Engagement Of Apprentices

In a major recognition of its skill development initiatives, ONGC has been felicitated and honored by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship for exhibiting outstanding contribution towards development of future workforce, through engagement of apprentices in the organization during FY 2016-2019. ONGC has been selected for the award for engaging more than 4000 apprentices during the successive Financial Years.

On behalf of ONGC, ED-Chief SDCs Mr Somesh Ranjan and CGM (HR) Ms Shanthi Wadhwani received the certificate of appreciation award from the Minister of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Dr Mahendra Nath Pandey and Minister of State for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Mr Raj Kumar Singh, at a function organized on 30 September 2019, on the occasion of Apprentice Day at New Delhi. Also present during the felicitation was Secretary- Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Dr K P Krishnan.

ONGC has responded in a big way to the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS), launched on 19 August 2016 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The scheme aims to promote apprenticeship training throughout the country, since it is considered to be one of the most effective ways to develop skilled manpower for India, by providing industry-led, practice-oriented and effective mode of formal training.

Since the inception of this scheme, ONGC has over-achieved the target of engaging apprentices set by the government. In the second phase of NAPS, ONGC engaged more than 4000 apprentices in 30 diverse trades across its 22 work centers under the visionary leadership of Director (HR) Dr Alka Mittal, who was earlier leading the Skill Development initiative of ONGC. The trades are selected by the respective work centers as per their requirement which results in a win-win situation for both ONGC and the apprentices who are trained every year.

During the course of the training, apprentices are trained in their respective trades under the mentorship of highly experienced and dedicated ONGC personnel, enhancing their employability by way of honing their practical skills and offering them the much sought after industry exposure in ONGC.

During NAPS-III, launching of Apprentice Online Management Portal was another landmark initiative under the guidance of Dr Alka Mittal. This resulted in the smooth processing of applications (4000 apprentices selected out of more than 65000 applicants) and selection of apprentices in record time of less than a month; thus saving precious man-hours, time, cost and making the process paperless.

Out of a large number of success stories where the ONGC trained apprentices got employment, few are enumerated below:

Mr Tapan Guhain, a Diploma holder in Mechanical Engineering from Silchar Polytechnic, received apprenticeship training in Field Maintenance at ONGC Sibsagar. During the course of the training he got himself well versed in the maintenance of oil field equipment like Water Injection Pumps, Diesel Engines, Air/Gas Compressors and a number of oil field processes. He was selected by Oil India Limited as Junior Engineer at its Duliajan work center in January 2019.

Mr Deepjyoti Chetiya, a Diploma holder in Mechanical Engineering from Silchar Polytechnic, received apprenticeship training in Assam Asset, Sivasagar as technician apprentice in Field Maintenance, where he learnt the know-how of various oil field equipment and got well versed in the maintenance of the same. He successfully joined Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), as a Junior Engineering Assistant in 2018.

Mr Banamali Gogoi, a trade certificate holder in Welding from ITI Haflong, received apprenticeship training in Field Maintenance Department of ONGC Assam Asset Sibsagar. While training he became adept in the servicing of oil field equipment. He successfully got employment in M/s KUIPPO, a private drilling rig operator, as a Technician in 2018.

Ms. Ayisha, received apprenticeship training as “Secretarial Assistant” at ONGC, Chennai. After completion of the training, she successfully got a job in the Medavakkam Health Centre, Chennai in 2019. The training imparted by ONGC in various phases included a large number of lady apprentices who were trained in technical trades especially in ONGC Central Workshops at Sivasagar and Vadodara.

The award to ONGC by the Govt. of India is recognition of ONGC’s contribution to the Skilling Ecosystem of the government. The feat was possible due to the relentless support extended by the Heads of HR of various work centers and a large number of ONGC mentors, who volunteered to skill the numerous batches of fresher, ITI’s, Diploma holders, Engineering and other Graduates in making them industry fit.
